What’s Happening
In May 2022, Planned Parenthood of Orange and San Bernardino Counties rented a building zoned for medical services in the heart of Fontana and began the process to construct a new health center to make essential reproductive health care more accessible for its citizens.
However, for over a year they were delayed with constant adjustments and unnecessary aesthetic demands by the City. In June 2023, an anti-abortion rally was held at the unannounced planned health center site and the very next month, the Fontana City Council placed an unjust moratorium on new construction permits that conveniently singled out Planned Parenthood and spared other businesses’ including those linked to a City Council member. By blocking Planned Parenthood, Fontana is prohibiting patients from accessing their constitutionally-guaranteed right to abortion and contraceptives through Prop 1.
Each month that the health center stands vacant means that at least 2,000 medical visits go unseen.
On July 23, 2024, the Fontana City Council voted to extend the “urgency moratorium” on new construction permits for another year, continuing to block Planned Parenthood of Orange and San Bernardino Counties from building a much-needed health center.
When we took a stand for our patients’ rights and filed a lawsuit against Fontana in December 2023, we made a promise to fight for the people of Fontana who deserve better health care and education in their communities, and we will not stop challenging this unjust moratorium until justice is served.
